“Nobody’s political career is more important than protecting the American people. Who among us is of such value that we would not say, ‘I’ll take a risk, so that our kids don’t have to take a risk and be in danger?’ So, I think there’s reason to be hopeful… And when it passes the House, some senators — well-intentioned — would no longer have the excuse: ‘It’s no use my risking my political career because it’s not going any place in the House.’ Let’s prove it. Let’s turn that around.” Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) quoted in Pelosi Tells Brady Campaign Just ’20, 30′ More Co-Sponsors Needed to Move Gun Control Bill [via pjmedia.com]
Be very very quiet. I am huntin’ wascally wabbits.
Except if it comes to a vote in the House the bill goes down to defeat. You can have 217 sponsors and still lose the vote. Gun grabbers can’t do arithmetic very well.
“Nobody’s political career is more important than protecting the American people.”
I never cease to be amazed when civilian disarmament advocates claim that taking away defensive firearms is “protecting us”.
Like I have said in other posts, whatever civilian disarmament proponents proclaim, look for the truth in the exact opposite of what they say.
He sounds like our State Senators and Delegates, who are quite content to allow us to be murdered in our beds with an illegal gun while we defend ourselves by dialing 911. Don’t they have armed police bodyguards? Hypocrisy? Naah…
“Pretty please” politics underlines their desperation.
This is exactly what Khrushchev meant in 1961, “We do not have to destroy America with missiles; America will destroy itself from within.” We will, with the best intentions (i.e. For the children) legislate away our freedoms, create unsustainable social programs, and tax our selves to death. That’s how America will die, with the best intentions and one freedom removed after another. Ever so slowly and incrementally.
That’s what makes guys like this sooooo dangerous. He thinks he’s doing it for the children, so he must be right and therefore he and others like him are on a crusade. Nothing will dissuade him or his partners, not facts, not logic, nothing. A crusade to do what feels right. Onward disarmament soldiers, if the gun nuts won’t hear our emotionally pleas, then they will feel our legislative wrath. Then we can make criminals of them all and have our militarized police makes us safe again (until the next shooting) while we sleep in our gated communities.
What’s that you say? We only have baking flour left? Ah, then, let them eat cake.
You give them far too much credit if you think they really believe this is good for kids, or anyone else. They either:
A. Irrationally hate citizen gun ownership or
B. Want to appeal to their base of hoplophobes.
Must be pretty sweeping legislation if it’s going to mean kids will never be in danger again. Guess they’ll have to stick a cop on every home to make sure no one is beating their kids.
Sure am glad I got my AK on the way if we are going to have another nonsensical gun control push. For the children may as well = for the criminals anymore. They are the only people benefitting from this malarkey.
Pelosi and Feinstein. The Demonic Duo. Make no mistake compadres, the increasing noise about UBCs is a carefully-orchestrated, public relations ploy timed around the anniversary of Newtown. A week ago Friday, Gomer Kelley and his queen announced Veterans for Responsible Solutions. Who announces anything like that late in a news cycle? Someone who wants it done publicly but with only a minor splash, sneaking it in. Over past 2-3 weeks, increasing number of op-ed pieces by Brady Campaign, increase in mention of gun safety out of Obama’s mouth. Two days ago Pelosi opened her mouth RE gun control movement in the House, yet she’s been silent mostly since last spring.
They are building momentum weekly, by Dec 14 expect there to be such a media clamor around UBCs that those morons in congress are likely to mistake the manufactured noise for a public opinion groundswell. I thought there is no way this could happen this year, but the build up is on. I thought they’d wait until 2014, but the Dems need distraction away from the abysmal Obamacare rollout, and we are it. Never let a tragedy go to waste, right Rahm?
Let’s pound our elected officials like we did earlier this year. Time for them to hear and feel our voices again, in advance of the freedom hating media getting so loud they drown us out.
The Republican majority and Democrats in red states who are already om trouble over O-care aren’t going to budge. This is all a bunch of sound and fury signifying nothing. If they couldn’t bill last winter they certainly can’t move one now.
I agree with his statement, but not his politics.
“At the beginning of every Congress we take an oath of office to protect and defend — that’s our first responsibility.”
He omitted “the Constitution of the United States” in that sentence. That’ll tell you what he thinks of it.
“Nobody’s political career is more important than protecting The Constitution AND The American people.”
There, fixed 😀
Im starting to think theres only one good think we can do with politicians from CA, or politicians in general for that matter: Throw them in a big damned hole.
What do you call a politician neck deep in concrete? —— Not enough concrete.
What do you call 50 Senators at the bottom of the ocean? —— A good start.
Your turn…. share your politician jokes.
What do you call 10 politicians who were thrown from an airplane?
Air pollution.
Guess, baby boomer’s parents didn’t give a rat’s a** about us since never heard “for the children” did not over schedule kid activities, pretty much left us to own devices, only main rule “be home before dark”
Bless them, had a great childhood, free to develop self sufficiency, confidence, responsibility and have a pretty good life.
“Just 20 or 30 more co-sponsors”
That reminds me of BASEketball… “I swear, if you guys rip on me 13 or 14 more times, I’m outta here!”
He isn’t even outside! Here, hold this shotgun Mike.
A real sportsman.
I am voting against EVERY incumbent.
GET OUT! GET OUT!!!!
You’re right on the money. That’s a studio portrait.
Worked in the land down under.
What we really need, to keep the children safe, is a massive new federal government program. This one will be about guns. Instead of “If you like your current insurance, can keep your current insurance,” you’ll have “we’re keeping the children safe for future generations.” Both are wonderful promises. Both are bullshit.
America will not have safety, financial success, or freedom until it returns to a limited government that respects the rights of its people. Since we are being systemically outnumbered and outvoted by dumba$$es, that may not ever happen again, and America is declining in strength and influence because of it.
“The government told us we could keep out insurance and our doctors. Now they are telling us that we can keep our guns.”
He states “Who among us is of such value that we would not say, ‘I’ll take a risk, so that our kids don’t have to take a risk and be in danger?’”
Fine. If you truly don’t believe politicians are more valuable than protecting our kids, take that risk, but YOU go first. Disarm the capital police. Disarm the DC police. Disarm the Secret Service. Disarm your personal bodyguards. Disarm yourselves.
Oh, wait. Just like Obamacare, it’s good for us serfs, but not for elected officials and those in bed with the Obama administration…
There is but one state in which there is no risk: Death. And then it’s too late.
Fortunately, Obama, and by extension the Democrats, blew their political wad on health care this fall and Congress is still somewhat inactive since the shutdown. I doubt this will go anywhere any time soon. No excuse to ignore them, though.
California disease. Until surgery to remove these bugs from our system it will continue.
“This will be an auto-da-fé for your careers, but vote for it anyway” is a remarkable bit of candor from Pelosi.
Mr. Thompson, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Not me personally, but a guy I know? They GOT IT ON! OOOWEE! No they didn’t…
No, no they didn’t. But you can imagine what it would be like if they did…
Basically, another grabber saying “It’s for the children, because we can’t trust armed citizens to defend themselves. Leave that to the professionals.”
Right.
Go look at Gonzales v. Castle Rock and get back to me. . .
Gun control for children is teaching them how to safely control firearms.
The first mass attack that I’m aware of in the U.S., the Enoch Brown School Massacre, took place in 1764. You can’t blame that one on semi-automatics or standard capacity magazines.
They also happen without any guns at all… such as the one that took place in China in 2012.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/14/world/asia/china-knife-attack/
So yeah… more gun control isn’t going to make anyone any safer. How about we try looking for real solutions instead of feel-good crap?
It’s so annoying to me that they’ll cite the 200 felons per day stopped statistic–or two million denials over the life of the program–when a) 90-95% of NICS denials are overturned on appeal (e.g. someone innocent was stopped from exercising a right for weeks or months, sometimes repeatedly) and b) most of those “felons” are guilty of victimless crimes.
At first I wasn’t sure which side he was on.
I figured it out after reading “so that our kids don’t have to take a risk”. At the risk of sounding pejorative, this statement is fantasy. We know this. They know this. No place is completely safe.
If he was on this side of the fence, it would come out like “so that we can better protect our kids from risks”. He comes across not as someone who is pragmatic, but who is pretending that risks can be eliminated.
Whoops. My third sentence was poorly written, didn’t actually say what I meant to say. Let me rephrase.
Pretending that risks to kids can be eliminated is fantasy.
I hesitate to use the word “fantasy” because it is often used in the process of name-calling. One pretends the opposition is irrational and then uses the word “fantasy”. In this case I used it because A) my audience here probably mostly agrees with me and B) the opposition, to some degree, also agrees with my conclusion. No gun grabber really thinks that any legislation will make kids safe, only safer.
Admitting to oneself that there is very little control over violent offenders is the first step towards focusing on defense rather than more attempted control and its many risks/downsides.
Mike Thompson is one of the more colorful @ssh0les in Congress, but he’s not stupid. With Obamacare turning into the unmitigated national disaster that everyone on the other side of the aisle said it would, he needs to distract America with something.
Guess what that “something” is?
I agree with him 100%. He should lay down his political career, buck the Disarmament Party honchos, and vastly expand firearm freedoms so mothers and fathers can more effectively protect their children. That *is* what he meant, isn’t it?
Will somebody take that gun away from this libtard grabber and instead, give him a vibrator.
