Former Secretary of Defense and CIA Director Leon Panetta reckons “expanded background checks” are the “middle ground” in the “debate” over gun control. Wrong. Gun rights advocates consider expanded background checks as acceptable as a safety on a revolver. But what does the California Jesuit school graduate (who never saw military action) know about Americans’ natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms? Niente. Less forgivable: James Johnson. If the Baltimore County Police Chief doesn’t know that “gun violence” is gang violence, that background checks are nothing more than politically correct feel-good security theater, then he’s an idiot. (Not entirely beyond the realm of possibility but not highly likely.) As for Sarah Brady’s ongoing crusade to do whatever it takes to “keep guns out of the wrong hands” good luck with that. Or, on the ends don’t justify the means level, not.
I had a discussion about background checks on Facebook. For the checks to be feasible and effective, they assume the government is effective and responsible regarding their record keeping. Clearly, they are not. I don’t see why any rational person would earmark $100 million a year to expand a system that is already not doing its job.
If the Syrian rebels don’t need background checks, why should American citizens have them?

Sarah Brady is correct – as long as she’s talking about keeping weapons out of the hands of the Mexican cartels, Al Queada, and the disadvantaged yutes of American post-apocalyptic neighborhoods. Of course, all those folks are Obama’s base so . . ..

Form 990 is a great way to find out what’s up and where the money is coming from and going to (including what they pay board members and the like).
Guidestar.org is one place to look but they seem to be going all “Premium” on reports – there are other places.
For 2011, they took in just short of $3M and spend about $285K on “Administration” and about $660K on “Other” (apparently some related organization that actually paid several key employees of the Brady Campaign for near full time work); the rest to “Programs”.
Sarah Brady was paid $130K in 2011.

No, if Brady wasn’t on the side of the “Serious People” that would be the first thing that they checked. However, since the Brady Bunch is pro government (and thus serious and bipartisan), they automatically get a pass on their funding, and compensation.

Criminals won’t obey any “new” background check laws any more than they do the current ones. This new law would ONLY be followed by the type of people that you shouldn’t be worried about in the first place.
Start prosecuting felons that commit crimes with guns and KEEP them in jail.

Once the hand is relaxed and on the floor, the defender should kick the gun away from the hand of the cooling – or at least down for the count – bad guy.
Nobody who supports gun rights believes, for a minute, that Background Checks are the desired end-point for the gun grabbers. We are all deeply suspicious that any background check provision will be a stepping stone to universal registry as a prelude to eventual confiscation.
And that’s the long and the short of it. Progressives follow every gain with a push for more. They are incrementalist and generational thinkers. They push to change what is considered “reasonable” to their side by degrees, with each step moving their ultimate goal (confiscation) closer to current norms.
Progressives will call you a paranoid conspiracy theorist freak for saying something like that. You also cannot say criminals will not follow any new gun control laws because they will come back with something like, “I guess we shouldn’t have any laws then. We don’t need stop signs anymore because some people will not stop for them. That’s how stupid you gun nuts sound.”
I have personally heard the stop sign line about 5 times in the last month. It’s too easy to predict what progressives will say since they are incapable of forming their own thoughts. They all parrot the same BS they read on Media Matters or saw on MSNBC.
Sarah Brady needs to have her friendly liberal politicians pass a law that will require all criminals, would-be criminals, and those with mental health problems turn in their weapons within 24 hours of the law’s signing. It also needs to have a 10 year+ jail sentence per weapon added for those that fail to turn in their guns. A $1,000 reward to anyone that reports the identity and location leading to the arrest of a criminal, would-be criminals, or those with mental health problems who have weapons.
This law would do a lot for the nation by removing criminals, would-be criminals, and those with mental health problems and their weapons from our streets and our society.
The “Citizens For Fear Of Our Lives” demand that all politicians take immediate action to remove all weapons from the hands of criminals, would-be criminals, and those with mental health problems. “Removing weapons from the hands of law abiding citizens is not enough.”

Just did some quick math, Ms. Brady gets a stipend from each office that has money. Total take $892,275.
….Mrs. Brady is simply the leech-like wife of some poor man who got shot…and she gets an ego-boost out of being “associated” with such a cause…and it makes her wealthy…so what is not to like about the anti-gun movement…from her perspective?
However…if one would really like to stop the violence (or slow) the violence in our society…I’d suggest the following…..
1.- Immediate hanging for any public official convicted of any form of corruption. I don’t care if it is taking a paper-clip home from the government sponsored office…if you act in an corrupt manner…at all….upon conviction….immediate hanging….
2. – Generational ability for abused /negelcted kids to file suit against their corrupt parents…the day they reach the age of 18. If the child can go into court…at any age…and document criminal abuse, neglect and criminal conduct on the part of the parents who raised them….the kids should be able to file suit.
3. – If the child wins their court battle against their abusive parents….(as an adult)… the parents immediately get sent to prison for life-remaining terms.
4. – Upon conviction of the parents for generational abuse…all government agents who were employed at the time to protect the child…schools, CPS…Police…all of them are open to generational lawsuits…and based upon their involvement in the cover-up or continued abuse of the child….they also get fines and jail time….
5. – Continue to allow the production of violent games and videos…as we are allowed the right of free speech….but tax the bee-jesus out of all profits derived from innappropriate violent medium…that can harm the healthy development of the child….then use those monies to replce every prison guard in the country with a real “Correction Officer” who is also a required therapist in some way…a guard and a Doctor…. to help the folks we have to keep in prison….but tax the hell out of violent games, tv and the prison & military-industrial complex….
…that should help us in about thirty years or so….Ha!

…I know…it sounds extreme…but I worked in corrupt government for over two decades…and the crucial thing is not the initial illegal act…it is the systemic cover-up and persecution of those willing to report or particpate in investigations…therefore…I think any corruption by a government official is critical…we should have a zero tolerance policy related to the idea of corruption…and in doing so…in a generation or so…we may have leadership that really follow the moral basis that they claim to have…but at a minimum…government employees need to know…zero tolerance…

After having lived all over the world…having a pretty good time…teaching business and management development..etc…for US DoD…at the age of 49 I was diagnosed as having been genetically epileptic…and the government had to settle with me on a retirment package as I was a federally protected whistle-blower for over two decades…and suffer from PTSD as a result…I kept seizing and passing out in the middle of teaching classes..(Ha! Not a good trait…for the teacher!)…but it got me aboard Air Force One…to the top of Mt. Fuji…and I got to live in a 600 year old home in germany…so that was cool….then in 2010 I survived accidently driving a car…(which I no longer do)…and flying off a 200 foot cliff at 70mph….got ripped out the back window of the car…throw down the face of the cliff a couple hundred feet…and was picked up by the emt and the helo folks off the edge of the cliff…broke my back in 5 spots…my neck in 4…broke six ribs and my tailbone…and ripped a 19 staple gash in my head brain….I walked out of the hospital five days later…but I still have seziures every six weeks or so that rip my memory apart… but in between…as I recover…all is good…I can still walk well…talk well…and I’m not crippled or dead….So life is like Amazing Grace in many ways…ha!
However…if you read my childhood memoir…you’ll understand that I’d been having seziures my whole life…but the drunken-corrupt cop-parents didn’t think about taking me to a Doctor..?

As the son of parents in firm denial about my brother’s schizophrenia, I’m truly sorry you had to suffer the consequences of that kind of neglect. It sounds like you have lived an amazing life with lots of incredible experiences. My mea culpa about the ellipsis.
oh, the elipsis thing……it’s all fun…..or…as my deceased brother once said…”it’s all just stuff* we’re doing while we’re waiting to die”…enjoy the day…and I can see why you’d get my point about the poor parenting…it is a blight on humanity….when we get my book made into a film…with a good soundtrack…then maybe we can shift the culture a bit..eh?

ha…ha!…sorry William…I was not clear…it was the unique employment opportunity that got me the chance to climb Mt. Fuji…in fact, I did not find out I was epileptic..until I was 49..years old…then I drove off the cliff…now I just have days of seziures..and lose my memory every six weeks or so….ha!
