Press release:
Savage Introduces MSR 15 Competition
WESTFIELD, Massachusetts – October 11, 2018 – Savage built the speed, accuracy and customization competitive shooters need to win into every aspect of its new MSR 15 Competition. Shipments of these firearms have been delivered to dealers.
The MSR 15 Competition is fitted with an advanced, 18-inch carbon fiber wrapped stainless barrel built specifically for the rifle in a collaborative effort between Savage and PROOF Research. Its unique ported muzzle brake allows the shooter to tune recoil impulse to stabilize the muzzle for faster, more accurate follow-up shots.
The custom-length gas block can be adjusted for optimal cycling of the full range of bullet weights, as well as for use with a suppressor. The gas block has also been upgraded with an integral Picatinny rail and a custom handguard.

barrel nut?
Do you want to touch my nuts?
Savage manufactures some very fine firearms for the price IMO. I was very impressed with its out of the box accuracy. For a mass produced firearms I give it 4 1/2 stars
I just want a standard Savage AR in 5.56 with their side charger. So far, only their 308 and now this race gun have been offered with it. I want an $800 option with the side charger.
This rifle is to Savage what the WRX STI is to Subaru.
I like it!! Make mine a .224 Val.
Someone must have hit the crack pipe a lot before coming up with those prices.
2800 is probably a pretty good price
if it had a 1000 dollar optic on it maybe
and a set of troy sights
and 5 pmags
and a sling
and a sturdy lockable hard case that says pelican on it
a 2800 dollar ar pattern rifle basically means that its got like a 1800 dollar upper and a 1000 dollar lower on it
extremely hard to justify
and cant exactly be marketed to a majority of the firearms enthusiasts out there
its just too easy anymore to build a reliable sub moa with the right ammo ar pattern rifle for 1000 dollars or less including a decent optic and a brake and a 2 stage trigger and an adjustable gas block and all that
and it will for all practical purposes be around 80 percent as good as this thing at a fraction of the cost
To be fair, the barrel is around a $1000, give or take a little. Otherwise, I agree, it’s expensive.
What, is it forged by Thor one per week, by hand, on his anvil? Go to a factory with belt driven tools or better.
They are Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped barrels. Savage outsources them. On brownells, they range in prices from $800-$1000.
Stocky’s usually has them for under $800.

I built something very similar to this about 2 years ago with a similar price to build it myself:
Matrix Arms side charging upper (no longer being made which is too bad);
Aero Lower with: a norgon ambi catch, ambi selector and a troy ambi mag release;
18″ proof research barrel 1/8 twist, wylde chamber, rifle gas;
15″ Troy CF battlelink Mlok free float hand guard w/ Magpul vertical grip;
Superlatives piston system and Bolt carrier, JP enhanced bolt;
Precision armament AFAB muzzel device;
Roger’s super stock;
Ergo grip;
polished milspec trigger group (very crisp);
It likes a 300 BO spring (rather than the flat wire one I had gotten for it) paired with a Taccom LW buffer;
PWS enhanced buffer tube, endplate and castle nut;
3-9 power Redfield scope, on a LW Areo mount, not fancy but solid and good quality.
She shoots soft and accurate. I call her my “Tax Return” rifle,
It seems since Vista Outdoors bought Savage Arms the prices ramped up quickly, and this is a prime example. I miss the good old days before all the leveraged buy-outs and investment firms got into the game.
They are using a $1000 Proof Research barrel. That’s 30% of the cost right there.
Savage produces their FIRST ar15 not too long ago. Now they have the BESTEST COMPETITION RIFLES EVA!
Below is just one example….besides that you have POF, PWS, LWRC, KAC. Sorry but cost benefit analysis of this shows that you’re fluffing someones bonus instead of investing in good equipment. But as the saying goes, “A fool and his money are soon parted.”
