Congressman Larry McDonald was one of the last great anti-Communists (as well as one of the last ever conservative Democrats). McDonald saw Reds under the bed long after President Nixon sent ping-pong players to China. The Georgia pol was murdered by the Russians—accidentally on purpose—when his flight to Korea strayed into Russian airspace. As a missile climbed up the ass of the KAL 747, I wonder if his last words were “Now who’s paranoid?” It’s the same question I ask myself when I contemplate plates for my safe room wall. I mean, if you are under the gun, why wouldn’t you want to shelter behind walls that can withstand rounds fired by the bad guys? ArmorCore.com says they “build for life.” Geddit? If you do, I’m not going to judge you. Oh, and the company uses Waco Composite’s materials. Since 1986, seven years before the siege. What does that tell you?

  1. I remember reading about the questionable quality of a lot of those armor panels for rooms. Also what happens when it isnt fully supported by massive wood beams? And they’re fvcking expensive. You can do the same thing with sandbags and they’ll be self-healing.

  2. I would say steal plate and sand bags, much cheaper.
But that might not be an option in my penthouse over looking central park soooo this would be the next best thing lol

  3. My GF just sent me this IMPORTANT message for America:

    Subject: Doctors vs Guns

    Doctors

    A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.

    B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.

    C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. Of Health and Human Services.

    Now think about this:

    Guns

    A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.

    Yes, that’s 80 million

    B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all ages and all
    groups, is 1,500.

    C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188 >>
    Statistics courtesy of FBI.

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more
    dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, ‘Guns don’t kill people, doctors do.’

FACT: Not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has at least one
doctor. This means you are over 9,000 times more likely to be killed
by a doctor as by a gun owner!!!

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.

We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, we withheld the statistics on
Lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek
    medical attention!

  4. This is great until they realize you are in a fortified position, give up on getting the loot, decide on teaching you a lesson because you didn’t give up the loot and decide to set your house on fire and pick you off as you flee the flames, coughing, teary eyed from the smoke.

If it comes to you needing this kind of protection, law enforcement has broken up (think Katrina and New Orleans PD) and you should have already headed to higher (less populated) ground.

If it’s “law enforcement” in any form coming for you, you’re done. Unless we are three months past the initial “event” and there is organized resistance at your service to help you escape. If you haven’t built the initial structure to resist fire and worked out a resupply option……yep…you’re done…

    • That is why you have to go for the rocket powered ejection package. It comes cheap direct from North Korea and is guaranteed to work.

    • I was thinking the same thing, and I was also thinking that if I’m going to lay out maybe $10,000 or $15,000 to make a very small room in my home bullet resistant, I’m going to get some use out of it. Eventually I’m going to get tired of waiting for someone to come chase me into my hole and I’m just going to start blowing holes in my wall my damn self, just to get some use out of it.

  5. Paranoid?

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/dec/29/fbi-coordinated-crackdown-occupy

An article by the brits, on how the FBI coordinated a crackdown on the 1st Amendment, including plans for targeted assassinations.

I know many on this board are completely turned off by the Occupy Wallstreet movement, but I think we ALL can agree, we are absolutely sickened by a government that is actively trying to tear away at our freedoms.

Your not paranoid. The rest of this country isn’t paranoid enough.

  6. IMHO, unless you’re high profile and very wealthy or the subject of intense hate because of your high profile political position you do not need a safe room. Invest some of that money into making your perimeter harder to breach and if that’s already been done put that leftover money towards your country retreat.

You do have a bug out location, don’t you?

  7. If you’re serious about having a safe room, and you armor it, then you give yourself enough time for police to arrive while the incident is still in progress.

If your armor is metal, I hope it doesn’t block cell signals, or if it does, I hope there is a landline inside.

More seriously, I could see keeping a bunch of empty sandbags in a closet. In case of a Katrina scale disaster, fill and stack them under your windows for firing positions.

  8. I cant get the video to play because T-Mobile SUCKS! In other words Ill have to do some old fashioned research on armor plates in the walls.

Until then allow me to speak with ignorance of the subject on a matter that concerns me.

As a firefighter we are trained on various escape methods, breaching and climbing through walls, sliding head first down ladders, worst case scenario – falling from a second story window. The wall breaching is my concern here. When SHTF in a fire and believe me it does, one method involves using your tool (a firefighter without a tool is in the way) to breach the wall between a pair of studs. There is various methods of then passing through said wall in full turnout gear, regardless of size. Im relativley small so I use the “swim” or “backstroke” method.

We already have to fight with electrical lines, our gear, furniture and possibly a victim. Please note that a civillian victim with clothes on is one thing but an entire RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) and a limp unconcious firefighter in full gear is a whole new set of problems. All of this trying to go through a pair of studs in your wall.

I will do more research on these armor plates but untill then will consider the odds of ones house burning down vs a home invasion. I have NO problem with being prepaired but doing so in a safe manner is what counts.

    • …and the odds me being that firefighter are virtually zero, so what do I care? Kidding.

      • Well Barstow, I know youre kidding but imagine this…

Kids have a tendancy to hide when they are scared, even during a fire. We are trained to search even in closets or ground level cabinets for this exact purpose. Not sure if you have kids and if so how old but think of a fire in your home. I go in and perform a search, find your child and now suddenly its too hot or my point of entrance is blocked. Im in that uparmored room with your child and it is nearing flashover (a point where the tempurature is so hot that everything including the gases in the air ignites). Better hope that there is a window in that room.

By the way survivability in a flashover is improbable for a fully geared up firefighter, seconds at best. A loved one in pajamas, I wont get in to details on that

  9. This is really overly-paranoid.

    I like it.

That said, any word on the price? Can’t seem to find it on their website.

    • Concrete offers no protection against small arms (unless you are talking about a solid pour which would be a little better) what you want is brick. I’d go with brick. Two layers of brick would be more resistant. But with brick you wouldn’t need the steel plates because the first layer of brick would turn the bullet into spall and the second layer would easily catch the spall.

  10. Trap door under carpet in bedroom closet, straight down to a concealed ladder into my underground tunnel which heads away from my property under the neighbors and on away.

    • A more mundane suggestion for your safe-room, assuming it’s only meant to provide protection until 911 gets there: Despite the denials of body-armor makers, you can buy equally effective UHMW (Ultra high molecular weight) polyethylene sheets in custom thicknesses and lengths, widths, at several sources. Industrial guarantees of virgin (not recycled) product quality are provided. You can choose ‘pistol and shotgun proof’ 1/2 inch, or rifle-proof 1 to 1 1/4 inch thick sheeting and hang it yourself on a door with good hinges or on studded walls. It’s cheaper, stronger, and more durable (resistant to age deterioration) than the kevlar products. But wait, there’s more: If you decide five years from now you don’t need the safe room, you’ll have fabulous commercial-grade cutting boards for life. This material is much lighter than 1/4 each mild steel.

        • In the 80’s while stationed in W.Germany I was “volunteered” to be the Brigade Commanders driver. His civilian issues vehicle was a 1985 Mercedes, which was fairly heavily armored. Nice car but drove like a slug compared to a normal Mercedes.
Windows wouldn’t roll down so if he or I wanted to smoke we had to stop somewhere and get out of the car. PITA in the winter.

    • I’ve got one of those too, but mine leads to a secret underground lair where I park my Batmobile.

      • If Anne Hathaway, Katie Holmes (pre-TomCruise) and Maggie Gyelenhal are down there with your Batmobile, please share the wealth.
