U.S. Senators Roger Marshall (R-KS) and Jim Risch (R-ID), along with a coalition of pro-Second Amendment lawmakers, have introduced the Sporting Firearms Access Act, a bill designed to prevent the ATF from arbitrarily blocking the import of firearms and ammunition into the United States. The legislation seeks to provide clarity to the “sporting purposes” test used by the ATF to regulate imports under the Gun Control Act of 1968.
The current ambiguity in the law allows the ATF to subjectively determine whether a firearm or ammunition qualifies for importation. According to the proposed legislation, the definition of “sporting purposes” would be expanded to include activities such as hunting, target shooting and competitions. The bill would also prohibit the ATF from denying imports of firearms or ammunition substantially similar to products already available in the U.S. market. To further protect consumers and businesses, the legislation would require the ATF to collaborate with the firearms industry to determine suitability for sporting purposes, provide an appeals process for wrongful determinations and allow for judicial review of ATF decisions.
Restoring Consumer Choice and Protecting Second Amendment Rights
“This legislation will advance fair and free trade and increase consumer choice by removing subjectivity,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Keane emphasized that the bill would ensure that bureaucratic interpretations of the law do not arbitrarily block Americans from obtaining firearms and ammunition that are clearly intended for lawful sporting purposes. “We commend Senator Risch for his leadership and urge passage of this bill,” he added.
The legislation is co-sponsored by Senators Mike Crapo (R-ID), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Rick Scott (R-FL), John Cornyn (R-TX), Steve Daines (R-MT), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Tim Sheehy (R-MT), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), and Ted Budd (R-NC). Together, the senators aim to restore clarity and fairness to the import process while expanding consumer access to firearms and ammunition.
Government employees don’t believe they have to follow the law. Now try to fire a government employee. And see what happens.
If president trump can do that? Then he will have accomplished 80% of what would help the law abiding.
“Sporting purposes” and 922r shit should be really low hanging fruit.
But I’m sure it will be a long pointless battle and we’ll get nothing out of it.
Came to say the same thing. Really wish this & the 922r crap would go away. Paraphrasing some old dude’s famous saying, “Unfortunately, all of this will be full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
For the MADE IN TURKEY bigotry displayed by some on this forum it’s Cheers for the atf.
Is that what we call well earned criticism of both quality control on the majority of products and their treatment of ethnic minorities? Yeesh you are as bad as the democrats with your doublespeak.
Don’t forget about turning a blind eye to all of those Chinese minors forced into long hours in the valve-stem sweatshops.
Can we get something in writing about parts kit demils as well? If they keep going there won’t be anything of a demilled surplus gun left!
Why clarify rather than changing the law to get rid of the “sporting purposes” criteria altogether? 2nd Amendment says nothing about “sporting purposes”.
you got it,should be ANY purpose.hunting,sport shooting,self defense or anything else.because it’s our 2nd A right.
I get the impression some shooting competitions rose out of the “sporting purpose” designation to show that supposedly non-sporting firearms do have a “sporting purpose”.
Just because a competition isn’t UIT or Camp Perry doesn’t make it any less sporting.
Atf I’d like to introduce you to Bill.
Atf, ” Does he have a dog”
😯 Oh No Mr.Bill !
When we can bid and purchase surplus full auto M4’s, no tax stamp, we will have arrived where we were in 1934, and nothing less is acceptable. Sporting purposes is a sham restriction to prevent ownership when the people are supposed to be armed with exactly what we issue. Its NOT a radical idea, it’s just scary to those who aren’t used to freedom.
Forget the bid thing.
Our tax dollars bought them.
We should have them given backn to us free of charge on a first come first served basis.
Call it a Gun Give Back Program.
Much more legitimate then a Police Buy Back.
“Gun Give Back Program”
I’m with you on that. In fact, just have the CMP zero out the prices and expand their inventory. Let’s begin with M1s…
HOWWWW has the absurd “sporting purpose” test NOT been overturned decades ago as blatantly unconstitutional? The NRA spent the 20th century training the nation to be scared of the courts (almost as if they were a tool of the deep state). Now, we thankfully have so many groups willing to sue.
