Our Man Farago is out in Sin City, at the 2011 Shot Show. He caught up with everybody’s favorite gunny sergeant/Glock endorser/GEICO shrink R. Lee Ermey at a Glock-sponsored range at the show. Being the intrepid reporter he is, RF stuck his trusty iPhone 4 out and captured some choice bits from the Gunny re: self defense.

Now I’m stuck back here in Louisiana this time around, so I’m having to do a little inferring on the exchange in this video, short as it is. But a couple of things practically scream out at me “What the…?” First of all, apparently Gunny keeps  his Glock free of one in the pipe. No live round chambered. That’s weird. THIS is weirder: when asked how many rounds are enough, Ermey replies “as many as it takes” (well…YEAH) but then goes on to state that he’s not worried…it only takes him 10 seconds or so to swap out magazines.

Ten seconds? TEN SECONDS?! Holy Crap, Batman, your average armed encounter is over in seven seconds! Were you planning on a reload to continue shooting the corpse, just in case they were a member of some cult of Zombie gang-bangers? A member of the undead, perhaps? Color me disillusioned, but I really thought Gunny woulda been a little more…um…situationally aware, and I’m speaking here of dealing with anybody that has a PRESS badge at a trade show. That deer in the headlights look is so 2001. Still.

  1. R. Lee doesn’t need to reload cuz he will kill the badguy with his first shot. I luv this guy and his show.

    • Me too. But ten seconds? Come on!

Interestingly, the guy who lives next door to me was in the Corps and told me that Ermey was his drill sergeant. He said that Ermey was every bit as tough as the characters he portrays in movies – with a LOT more four-letter words thrown in.
