CNN is reporting that a man fired over 50 rounds into the air at an outdoor shopping center in Southern California. Apparently no one was hurt from the gunfire, but one person was injured while running away from the scene. Police responded to the scene and arrested Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, who was found with a handgun. More below from the local police blotter:
On December 15, 2012, Newport Beach Police responded to the area of San Miguel Drive and Newport Center Drive in response to several calls of possible shots fired. Witnesses reported seeing a male standing in the parking lot outside of Macy’s in Fashion Island firing a weapon multiple times into the air. Newport Beach Police Officers working in the area arrived quickly and took the suspect into custody without incident.
Based on witness statements at the scene, and as a result of the preliminary investigation it was determined that the suspect fired approximately 50 rounds from a handgun into the air. There were no reports of injuries related to the shots fired, however one individual sustained minor injuries while fleeing the area.
The suspect was standing next to his vehicle at the time of the arrest and advised officers there was additional ammunition located in the trunk of his vehicle. As a precautionary measure the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was called in to remove the ammunition from the vehicle.
The couple stories I read on this didn’t mention the “into the air” part, they simply said no one was injured (aside from the running away thing). What the hell? A cry for help or something?
Or someone wanting suicide by cop.
He was arrested by cops on bicycles!!! LMAO that tells you how dangerous this all was…
People certainly went nuts though….
When it rains, it pours…
Wait a minute. Southern CA? I thought it was illegal to own that much ammunition, let alone a gun that could hold half that.
I was actually right across the street at Muldoon’s when this happened. On the way out I talked to a cadet and he said it was a 10/22 Charger with a 50 round clip.
you can own as much ammo as you wan, but you can only have a 10 rd mag.
So, he had 5, 10 round mags that he kept running through in the parking lot? Geebus…more overinflated sensationalism by the media, to make it sound as SINISTER as possible. Just glad he was shooting in the air. I hope this fool get’s prison time to think about his stupidity.
correct me if i’m wrong don’t they have the “california” button on the mag release…or is that just the rifles?
Just long arms/rifles that are labeled “assault weapons” (that have a pistol grip that puts the webbing of your thumb below the trigger, and can accept removable mags) have to have bullet buttons installed. The law states you must require “tooling” to remove magazines for reloading of these sorts of weapons. The Bullet Button creates the situation that requires “tooling” (bullet tip, or other device) to remove the magazine for reloading. Bullet buttons were invented to make that “tooling” as easy as possible for us law-abiding gun owners. Our rifle capacity is legally limited to 10 rounds.
All handguns in CA legally have a max capacity of 10 rounds as well.
One handgun per 30 days. (You can buy all the AR’s you want however. Weird.) 10 day waiting period on any handgun/long gun purchase (unless it’s a C&R). All weapons must be registered – new or person to person, or transferred from family member. Everything must be registered to new owner, go through a back ground test, finger printing, etc. 10 round capacity/limit. Bullet buttons on AW’s. No CCW’s in my area, period. No tracer bullets. No full auto’s. No suppressors.
That’s CA’s gun laws in a nutshell for you.
Did I mention I WANT TO MOVE!!!! 🙂
Only rifles with “evil” features like pistol grips, collapsible stocks, and flash suppressors.
Not true…you can have all of those “evil features”, including a standard non-bullet button removable mag, as long as the first two core points are not “YES”. 1) Pistol Grip that puts webbing of thumb below trigger, and 2) accepts removable mags.
You can use a weird monster man grips, california rifles buttstock, and many other grip and stock options made for CA to get around #1 above – allowing you to use 10 round removable mags, flash hiders, forend grips, etc…although it’s arguably stretching the law.
It’s oddly called a “featureless build” – it trades one major feature (pistol grip) for all of the others.
Correction! I meant to say that the BB allows the use of evil features. The Featureless build allows none (except for the standard removable 10 round mag). Thats what I meant to say.
Moto, it appears you took your photos down after your initial post, but I got the email. 🙂
I just came to say that those look like really nice builds. The pistol especially.
So basically on your “featureless build” you put a stock on it that gives it a wrist like a deer rifle, and you can free-for-all most of the rest of it? Seems like a perfect opportunity to put a heavy barrel on it and turn it into a long range shooter.
Thanks Matt…
Yeah, the pistol is fun…check welding it with with the CAA side saddle and it works well. I am pretty darn accurate with it.
The featureless build – yes. That’s the idea on the stock at least….but no, once you have a removable mag in CA, you can’t have the other evil features (pistol grip, flash hider, VFG, etc).
If you have a Bullet Button (mag removes with “tooling”), you can put all the evil features you want on it.
The featureless build is my LMT MRP. I’ve got a 6.8spc setup for it and use it for longer range applications. The thing is so heavy, I opted to make it the long-range, “featureless” build.
just on center fire rifles
If it wasn’t for all the sad crazy news this week I’d make a joke about quickly grabbing the empty shells in the parking lot and using them for re-loading.
Somehow I don’t think this will be the last of the year. Something is afoot. This is way out of sync with the past 10 years or so. Why the sudden spike in mass shootings?
Could just be random. Some years are bound to be statistical fliers.
Sure hope you’re right…
You may have a point. But man, the timing couldn’t be worse for a2, or my gun investment. Sorry for sounding self centered, but denying me the chance to protect myself kind of hits closer to home than anything else.
Four years of a sh*t economy. Employment opportunities for folks under 30 getting lousier year after year. Real take-home income for everyone outside of the .o1% shrinking. Media filled with doom and gloom (well, except for the 2 months right before the election). General sense that America is on the decline and the world is even worse. Conspiracy theories proliferating all over the Internet – and worse, some are probably even correct.
A lot of folks who might previously have been borderline, and been too busy earning a living are getting pushed over the edge. Combine it with reduced funding for mental health and hyper-zealous “advocates” for the mentally ill trying to keep anyone from incarceration. Read the link below about the difficulty of getting help for the next potential shooter.

It could be crazies thinking 2012 is really the end of the world. Heck, there are even movies about end of the world in 2012.
Reporting bias. Plenty of incidents occur that don’t get the full attention, and then we an overload of reporting with lots of exxagerration and lies.
Maybe everyone is going nuts hoping the world will end on Friday? Like, hey I have nothing to lose. Come Saturday, oh wait… they were wrong.
And I’m alright with this idiot not owning a gun for the next 10-20 years or so.
You’re being too generous.
Well I just got called unreasonable because I objected to traffic school for a guy going 110 mph in a 65 zone, so I’m making extra efforts to be nice!
No need. the sky shooter and your speeder were both being azzholes.
How is speeding being an asshole? If he was swerving around, tailgating, cutting people off, etc then you have a point because he was driving dangerously. Simply driving fast does not mean he was driving dangerously.
Tot, Accur81 is a city cop. There’s no place in any city I’m aware of that driving in excess of 100 mph doesn’t make you a lethal threat to anybody on those same streets.
Sorry, JWM, but you’re still not providing a factual claim. Did he say the guy was in the city, as in on normal streets? He said in a 65 mph zone, which implies the highway – most people around the country do 80 mph or so on the highway with a speed limit of 65 mph. If he maintained a safe distance to cars in front of him and wasn’t swerving around, he wasn’t doing anything dangerous.
With respect Tot, we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
Well he gets to go to the pokie now.. What a total idiot!!
The speed was on the freeway, with a warning for wreck less driving. Just FYI.
And to jwm, I remain anonymous because my department does not wish us using the name of our department on social media, and I do my best to respect their wishes. As some of you might expect, I’m not exactly a yes man.
Shouldn’t he be commended for “wreck less driving,” especially if he was speeding?
Sorry, I had to. I know what you meant.
It was California for God’s sake. He will get more prison time for violating the “possession / discharge of lead ammunition in a Condor zone” than he will for shooting at people.
Long live the wacko environmentalists!
Actually he’ll get more time for the high capacity mag felony…
Wait, it’s Kalifornia?
They don’t count for things related to reality.
Actually the electoral college votes, economic importance/impact, innovation and technology (that you use everyday) from CA would say otherwise. They all affect the reality of your life, whether you choose to admit it or not. Your hatred towards tree-huggin’, anti-gun, liberal-Democrats doesn’t change that.
Just sayin’. (I’m no tree-huggin, anti-gun, liberal-Democrat…unfortunately I just have to breathe the same putrid air they do;)
As a precautionary measure the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was called in to remove the ammunition from the vehicle.
This is a joke, right? CA police are so terrified of guns that they need the bomb squad to pick up a damn box of ammo? Do they call the bomb squad in to load their magazines before going on duty?
They just weren’t taking any chances. The Aurora nutcase had set up pyrotechnics at his apartment. Getting into cars and checking out “suspicious packages” is creepy business. I’m not sure if they had additional intel or they were just being cautious, and those bomb robots are tough little beasts.
You’re confusing a homicidal nutjob with a guy who wasn’t hurting anyone. Big difference there. If he was out to hurt people, he would have been shooting people and not into the air.
