In a $130.5 million cash deal, Smith & Wesson has purchased Columbia, Missouri-based Battenfeld Technologies. You probably know Battenfeld by some of their more familiar brands of shooting, gunsmithing and hunting accessories such as Caldwell, Wheeler Engineering and Tipton, among others. While Smith’s sales have stagnated recently (mostly due to lagging long gun sales), as nasdaq.com notes, “Smith & Wesson will gain immense traction from this acquisition. Battenfeld will not only provide the company opportunities to enhance its accessories portfolio . . .
but also enable it to expand aggressively into the hunting vertical. It will thus provide the company with the right platform for expanding its footprint in the firearm accessories market. Moreover, Battenfeld has been witnessing organic compound annual revenue growth rate of over 12%, which speaks volumes about the company’s robust organic growth strategy and its strength in the field of product development.”

Glad to see it is Smith, not another Freedom Group acquisition!
Rarely does a company buy another without some kind of plans already in the works on what to do with them. I’m curious as to what they come up with. I’m not familiar with any of these companies, anyone have any ideas what Smith & Wesson might be trying to do with them?
Tipton, Wheeler, Caldwell etc. make first rate, low cost, high margin gunsmithing products, storage and shooting accessories, like the Tipton Gun Vise and the Caldwell Lead Sled. It’s a good fit for S&W, which is more than anyone can say about Smith’s recent catastrophe with Smith & Wesson Security.
And this is wherein my fears for this reside: That Smith will ‘rebrand’ the items, raise prices, and potentially lower quality looking to cut costs.
