Facebook recently announced a ban of all pages that sold guns privately. Immediately after its decision, firearms-related Facebook pages that don’t enable private one-to-one sales went dark. This does not represent a widening of Facebook’s ban. My information: anti-gun Facebook users are reporting these pages. Facebook then pulled the plug without any further vetting. When we contacted Facebook directly, they verified the fact that the pages are not in violation of their policy and republish them. Here’s a report on the process from 1 Million Moms Against Gun Control . . .
2nd Amendment
Gun Ownership and the Privileges of Youth
At what age are you responsible enough to own a weapon? A firearm? Or to get more specific, a handgun? On Friday, a Federal judge in Northern District of Texas ruled against overturning a law that sets the age limit at 21 or older for buying/owning a handgun. Most states set 21 as the minimum age for handgun purchase, and 18 as the youngest you can be and own a long gun. The NRA, God bless ’em, plans to appeal. But if we’re gonna have law that puts limits on Constitutional right, what limits? What’s reasonable? And how young is too young to own a handgun?
“Conventional Wisdom.” As unreliable as “Common Sense” is rare.
Did you ever stop to think about why you think what you think? Seriously. Let’s stop a minute and consider one of those “meta” questions, like “why do we believe what we believe.” I started down this path today, after reading an article about Justice Clarence Thomas, and how he works within the Supreme Court. The conclusions of the article are interesting. What I learned from the article, and how I arrived at my conclusions bear discussion.
A Tea Party guy explains the 2nd Amendment.
Look past the repetitious (and somewhat cheezy) graphics. Listen to what Whittle has to say. If you’re a gun owner and you’re not a Tea Party supporter, watch the video with an open mind, if you can. You might discover that the Tea Party has an awful lot in common with the principles you believe in, as a gun owner.
How Well Do You Know Your Constitutional Rights?
It’s an interesting question. I mean, here on TTAG we talk a lot about the 2nd Amendment, and exercise our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights on a daily basis. Of course, the Tea Party phenomenon has made the Constitution a hot topic, and those on the left have made a career out of telling us either that the Constitution is outdated, it’s a “living document” (which is code for “we can interpret it in whatever way we see fit”) or that it needs changing/we should just ignore it. But everyone who wants to have a voice in this discussion should at least know something about what the Constitution says, dontcha think?
What…Me Vote?
Okay TTAGers. November 2nd is fast upon us. For those of you busy reading our site (and thank you for that, by the way) and not paying attention to politics and current events, November 2nd is Election Day around the Nation. If you haven’t voted already, I’m here to nag you into doing your civic duty and do it. But it’s not enough just to vote. It’s who you vote for that will make a huge difference, more so this year than any other. Let me explain…
U.S. Supreme Court Strikes Down Chicago’s Handgun Ban
The decision has just been handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court, reaffirming your right to own a gun in all 50 states. This is a game-changer, folks. In a 5 to 4 ruling, Justice Samuel Alito writing for the majority, stated “the right to keep and bear arms must be regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as the States legislated in an evenhanded manner.”
Newt Gives a Fig About the 2nd.
You gotta hand it to the NRA. When a last-minute scheduling conflict prevented Sean Hannity from delivering tonight’s keynote address, who did they tap to take his place? Last year’s keynoter, Glenn Beck. (For Conservatives, that’s like saying “hey…Thomas Paine had to cancel…but it’s okay. We got Patrick Henry to take his place.”) So who’s … Read more
Robert Baillio “Gun Harassment”: a Black and White Issue?
When you’re a reporter, you dream of a day when a story – a really juicy story – falls right into your lap, all tied up neatly in a bow. So it was with visions of the blogger’s equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize (there IS a blogger’s equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize . . . isn’t there?) that an email came across my desk in my lonely writer’s garret, that made me sit up and take notice. The email recounted a story about a man who was pulled over for a traffic stop. He had pro-gun bumper stickers affixed to the rear window of his pickup truck. It was late at night. When he was pulled over, he immediately got out of his truck and walked to the rear of the vehicle. The officer asked him “do you have any guns in the vehicle.” He said, yes I do.” The officer asked him to stay in the back of his truck, walked to the truck and removed the firearm from the vehicle.
