Ted Cruz addressed the NRA Annual Meeting this afternoon, walking in to a standing ovation and a packed auditorium to speak about guns. His most powerful statement, in my opinion, was when he said that every word of the Constitution matters. People such as Mayor Bloomberg have stated that our constitution will need to be re-evaluated in the face of terrorism, and the very freedoms that Bloomberg cites as what makes America great will need to be eliminated. Cruz ain’t having none of that. Make the jump for the full text of Ted Cruz’s speech . . .

“It seems to me that when the Constitution says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, that means the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The Constitution matters. All of the Constitution. It’s not pick and choose. It’s not take what part you like and get rid of the parts you don’t like. For some reason Obama liberals want to disregard the First Amendment and take away our right to speak and political speech. For some reason they want to disregard the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. And, for some reason the Obama liberals want to disregard the Tenth Amendment and implement Obamacare and take away our liberties. Every word of the Constitution matters. It is our fundamental protection of our liberties against the government….”

“In America, the people have the power. A month ago you had the president holding press conference after press conference after press conference and his package of legislation that would have undermined the Second Amendment looked like an unstoppable freight train. I was proud to join my friends Senator Rand Paul and Senator Mike Lee in writing a short and simple letter to Harry Reid that said we will filibuster any legislation that undermines the bill of rights and the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. But what happened next was truly amazing. What happened next was each and every one of you, millions of Americans began speaking out…and what happened in this battle is that millions of men and women across the country got on the phone, got on Facebook, got on Twitter and said, ‘Leave our Constitution alone.’

“Standing in front of this ginormous American flag is the closets this lawyer will come to feeling like General Patton. But I’m looking out at an Army, and the voice of each of you is how we win. And because each of you spoke out and because millions of Americans spoke out two weeks ago, when those proposals came to a vote every amendment that would have violated our Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms was voted down.

“The fight is not over. President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have come out and said they intend to come back at it…I would like to invite the Vice President to engage in an hour long conversation and debate about how we stop crime. If Vice President Biden really believes the facts are on his side and this is not an exercise in political power, I would think he would welcome the opportunity to talk about the sources of violent crime and how we can do everything we can to stop it.“

  2. Texans should be proud of their Senator, in this and his debate before the senate vote. Wish we had him in VA. Should he suffer a sudden stroke and decide running for president is a good idea he’s got a voter here.

    • Oh we are. Ironically, Ted Cruz would probably have failed in the primary if his opponent hadn’t run the dirtiest, nastiest, most underhanded political campaign I’ve ever seen.

      I think Dewhurst convinced a lot of Texans they didn’t want that much vile holding office any longer.

      The fact that Cruz held steadfast during that campaign and just fought with facts probably spoke a lot to his ability to handle this. He survived that nonsense, the Dems haven’t come close to what he endured just in the Senate primary.

    • This guy is a superstar. As a native born Texican, I’m proud of both Senator Cruz and Senator Cornyn. I kinda feel bad that I didn’t vote for Cruz. I was feeling lazy this time, so I just marked straight Libertarian…

  3. Unlike most politicians, Cruz actually knows Con Law. He was a law clerk at SCOTUS for Rehnquist (IIRC), and he led the SCt and Appellate practice at Morgan Lewis. Also, look at the SCOTUS opinion in Medellín v. Texas, which Cruz argued. That case may save us under the UN arms ban. Finally, read any of the leftist blogs and MSM who are screaming so much hate at Cruz, you’d think he loaned Adam Lanza a rifle. They HATE Cruz because they know he can defeat them.

  4. We have someone in there now who knows Constitutional Law, but is using it in the same way in which a jewel thief uses the blueprints of the building he next plans to hit.

    • This guy’s father supported Castro in Cuba, then watched as Castro disarmed the population, thus allowing dictator status for Life. With Ted Cruz, 2nd. is personal, very personal. He will fight infringement because he understands
      consequences.

  5. I certainly agree with Mr. Ralph’s evaluation of Ted Cruz’s legal skills, though my perception is that of a ‘legal layman’. But mostly, I just wanna say – “God Bless Ted Cruz”!

  9. Considering that 99% of House Republicans voted for the Patriot Act, I’ll have to take any talk from a Republican politician about every word of the constitution mattering with a grain of salt.

    Both parties are terrible on civil liberties, just in different ways. Republicans seem to never pass up a chance to drive a stake through the 4th amendment just so they can be seen as ‘tough on crime’ or ‘fighting terror’.

    A plague on both their houses.

    • When the Patriot Act was originally set into place, the prime suspect was the radical Islamic terrorist. With the continuation of the Patriot Act, it sure seems like the straight, white, Christian gun owner who doesn’t celebrate government expansion is the target.

      I supported the 1st iteration because I thought it was necessary, but this registered Republican (with a libertarian streak) can learn from his mistakes.

      Defund the Patriot Act (and the ATF and Obamacare) would be a great start for either party, but I heartily suspect the Democrats would not even consider such a thing.

      • This is why you don’t mess with civil liberties, no matter how advisable it seems at the time. It’s turning over a knife that you may well find in your own back someday.

  11. This is what Rand Paul should have said; not that “well if the drone were shooting at a *bad* guy that’s okay” thing he came out with.

    Why is this so hard for people to in politics to get these days.

    Looking to me like needs to be Cruz for President in 2016.

  15. The Amendments in the Bill of Rights have one notable thing in common: they guaranty rights against the government. The Second Amendment is no more subversive or anti-government than is free speech, uncompensated takings, or due process. In fact, it actually works to secure a free state, which tells you a lot about its enemies. Cruz for President!

        And I would definitely vote for him in a heartbeat. Especially a Cruz/Rand Paul ticket. Though I would accept Ron as well.

  18. Yes, a poignant statement from someone who is in favor of a Christian theocracy. “every word” indeed. I suggest everyone who’s not a christian be armed to protect the rest of us from bible thumpers. Fascism is always a right wing, religious failing.

    • Not sure how that works, rtempleton.

      In fascism, the state is the ultimate authority. In religion, God or gods as the case may be, is the ultimate authority. Religion may play a role in a fascist’s rise to power, but eventually the leader would turn on said religion to cement pure power.

  20. Senator Cruz gets it. Any elected serpent who doesn’t understand it should resign or be imprisoned for they are violating their oath of office simply by holding the office when they refuse to uphold and defend EVERY word of the Constitution, not just the ones they like or the ones they can twist to their own liking. As far as I am concerned, ANY elected serpent who refuses to defend the Constitution as written in its entirety is a TRAITOR and deserving of a traitor’s death, BY LAW.
