Remember the portentious announcement by our friends at the Brady Campaign about something BIG happening on January 8th? Come on, we posted on this Thursday. Not ringing a bell? Exactly. That’s how much of an impact the tease for their “major initiative” made. Anyway, we (and most of you) expected a fizzle, but I’m not sure anyone could have predicted a squib of such epic proportions. The big idea is (drumroll please)…lighting a candle. That’s right, light a frickin’ candle…

No big-name endorsers. No push for more legislation. Not even a bake sale, as Aharon boldly predicted. No, all they could manage to come up with was burning some paraffin and liberating a little carbon into the atmosphere. Wait til the global warming crowd gets a load of this.

On the off chance you needed any more convincing that the anti-gun crowd is totally, utterly, indubitably out of ideas and, sotto voce, admitting defeat, well here it is.

  1. Here is what Americans should do to prevent gun violence:
    Get training and instruction
Purchase and Learn about your firearm!

Following is an excerpt from the Brady Camp’s “Tribute” page. The son would be alive today had he been armed and able to defend himself :

On a Friday afternoon, several cold hearted people entered our home and invaded it without a cause. They held my son who was only 20 and my daughter who was only 12 at gunpoint. They proceeded to rob our home and began to tie my son up with a cord and placed him as well as my daughter on their stomachs side by side.

When they were done, they all began to leave but one stood behind and cowardly shot my son in the back. After the shooter ran out, my brave and courageous son untied himself and tried to stand on his feet but sadly he fell right back down to the floor. Then he turned to his sister and said, “Go get help. I think I’m going to die.” She then responded to him by saying “Please, Gibby, don’t die!” As she went to go get help, my son was quickly losing his life all alone. When his sister returned, he was all ready gone!

Gibby leaves behind a little girl who will never be able to know her father, a family that is emotionally traumatized every day he’s away from us, and friends that were more like brothers and sisters who will not be able to spend any more special moments with him. This is a tragedy that should never have happened. If there were stricter laws on gun violence, our Gibby would be here today.

He enjoyed life to the fullest everyday all day with a smile that would light any darkness. He wore his smile no matter what obstacle would come his way. His laughter and kindness were shown to all he crossed paths with.

Everyday as we remain here to live, he will forever keep shining for us all. His inspiration has had an effect on all our lives. To all, he’s a hero whose life was taken so that many other lives could be changed for the good. That is why our GIBBY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

  2. Inspiration! The pro-gun community needs a website where gun owners can post their own stories of how gun ownership has protected innocent people and private property from criminals. Going beyond the obvious stories, gun owners can also tell stories of how guns have made a positive contribution in their lives from putting food on the table to what they have observed occurring in foreign countries where citizens do not have access to guns, etc.

Progressive political movements and elections are increasingly moving to emphasize a newer personal and emotional tactical approach (more than ever) to motivate people to support them hoping for change. Their idea for this new site is possibly a long term project in the making.

“Not even a bake sale, as Aharon boldly predicted”.
    — Ha! 🙂 I can imagine the Brady gang supporters trying to raise money by selling hash brownies in Golden Gate Park right near Haight Street and Stanyon.

  3. I was really expecting more.
I really do not think people getting killed by guns is groovy, and I can feel sympathy for those who have lost loved ones to gun crimes and gun accidents; but I just do not think that passing a bunch of dumb gun laws will magically turn criminals into law abidding citizens. What I really think is that gun laws will just empower the criminals to prey on their victims with greater ease and impunity.

  4. Wow. What’s next? Will Dennis click his red heels together three times? Repeating “I wish guns would vanish” with each click?

  5. The mockery and ridicule in these comments is disgraceful. The topic is the tens of thousands of gun deaths, many of which could be prevented. Yet, the mental midgets among you find that worth joking about like adolescent high school boys. Yuckety-yuk.

I don’t think Dan’s right about the gun control movement being washed up. That’s wishful thinking. This candle think is just another attempt to increase awareness among the apathetic. I don’t think it’ll do much, but awareness building is an important aspect of any movement.

    • The disgraceful thing is that grabbers like you would invoke changes that would make more victims. I guess some prefer being a victimizer over being responsible for one’s own safety,.

    • Mike, simply put the problem is not guns but a lack of respect. The people who kill and wound lack a respect for life and other people’s rights. Examine the US city with the most gun control, Washington DC. Last year (2010) DC had twenty seven times more murders than the next largest city which is El Paso, TX. Both cities are on the edge of the nation and have large minority populations. The difference between the two cities is that DC prevents responsible adult citizens from being permitted to carry concealed handguns while El Paso does not AND in Texas you can get the death penalty for murder and actually be put to death. Even you, Mike, must admit twenty seven times more murders from a smaller city is a huge amount. The campaign to restrict responsible adults from using firearms does nothing to address the core problem of violence. That problem is a character problem as described by a gentleman named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

  6. If only there had been someone there who was ARMED, the death toll might have been a lot lower.

Sadly, no one took personal responsibility for their own protection.
