Tim Walz might not have been the first choice for governor of many of those who attended a meeting Wednesday in a St. Paul brewery. The DFL congressman did not have the bona fides on the issue that members of the group Moms Demand Action is organized around: gun safety laws in response to deadly school shootings around the country.
While the six-term congressman has changed some of his positions on gun laws over the last several years, Walz wasn’t Erin Murphy, the DFL primary candidate who backed the strictest gun control measures. Walz had that pesky résumé item of having been endorsed by the NRA in the past, and then there were the photos: pictures of Walz wearing a camo hat with the message, “Tim Walz: NRA Endorsed.”
Then came the primary. Not only did Walz easily defeat both Murphy and state Attorney General Lori Swanson, his victory set up a general election against a Republican candidate whose positions on the issue are the opposite of Moms Demand Action. Unlike Tim Pawlenty, who was expected to win the GOP primary right up until he didn’t, Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson opposes any additional controls on guns.

With at least one city council member threatening to leave the room if a “Firearms Awareness and Safety Day” proclamation was read at last week’s meeting, Longmont Mayor Brian Bagley opted for unity.
He canceled the reading, saying his desire to keep the council unified outweighed his promise to gun-rights advocates that he would read the proclamation.
“The whole point of doing this is to maintain cohesiveness with council,” Bagley said. “I am going to stand by my council. Together, that is where the strength lies.”
Council emails show Mayor Pro-Tem Polly Christensen less than an hour before Tuesday’s council meeting sent a message to Bagley that she would not pose for a photo with the mayor or the proclamation’s supporters and would leave the room if the proclamation was read.
Despite the proliferation of these systems, in 2018 it appears that guns have largely fallen out of favor. In the land forces modernization plan that planned to give the Marine Corps additional SHORAD, a missile only system was proposed. New Russian air defense vehicles are mounting only missiles as well, eliminating the gun component of the Pantsir system. The same situation is occurring with militaries around the globe.
But why are militaries moving towards missile only solutions? There are a multitude of reasons.
Missile systems are becoming more and more capable. When the M163 VADS came out, it was paired with the M48 Chaparral medium surface-to-air missile launcher. The Chaparral fired modified AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.
Police say they were called to downtown Greenville about a man who was presenting himself as a SWAT officer, complete with tactical clothing, a badge and a gun belt with a visible weapon.
An officer responded to a nuisance call about a man appearing to be acting as a SWAT officer. The officer said he found Corey Moore dressed in green tactical pants, a black polo shirt and police/military boots, with an exposed badge on a chain around his neck.
When questioned, Moore could not verify that he was any kind of credentialed law enforcement officer and said the gun on his belt was a toy, the officer said.
Police said the badge Moore was wearing read “private investigator.”
Eliminate gun-free zones and this will be much less of a problem . . .
On one hand, Jason Boek, who did not have a firearm at the time, and David Katz were willing to use deadly force to cause harm to themselves and others.
On the other hand, Robert Westlake was willing to put himself in harm’s way to defend himself and his passenger from being victims of violence.
The biggest factor in both of these cases, only days apart, is how Boek’s and Katz’s reactions to emotional distress were met with violent outcomes. Katz lashed out at his fellow gamers in reaction to his loss at the tournament. Boek exhibited the inability to control his emotional response to his estranged girlfriend supposedly leaving the bar. To the general population of America, these overreactions are well outside the norm, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
As far as I’m concerned, the guns vs. missile debate shouldn’t be an either-or debate, but what ratio of each for the mission.
Missile-only leaves nothing for targets of opportunity while overflying enemy territory.
Guns-only means limits to engaging only one target at a time…
Keep and bear arms,of course either and or,what ever fits best for the job at hand,much like the choice of rifle or shotgun which ever is best.
I assume you mean close-in targets that did not present themselves until it would seem to be too late to acquire a track and launch a missile. Looks at the capabilities of any modern countries’ latest generation missile systems. The most prominent examples are below, though China is close behind Russia and in some ways surpasses everyone.
1. USA: Patriot, SLAMRAAM, THAAD, AEGIS, etc.
2. Russia: S-300, S-400, S-500 (in development), Pantsir-S1, etc.
Ignore the 1970’s or early 1980’s versions of the above systems. Those are now ancient. Look at the mid-1990’s and beyond.
The target tracking radars of various overlapping systems have the capability to see absolutely everything from 1ft above the ground to low earth orbit. Even aircraft using terrain masking aren’t invisible if the individual radar sites aren’t co-located. This doesn’t even factor in cueing from more capable radars, such as early warning or civilian ATC feeds.
Now look at the acquisition-to-launch timeline, the missile reload timeline, and the startling ability of some of these systems to do all three (acquire/track, engage, reload) while on the move. The old Comanche (remember that one?) low-observable helicopter, flying nap of the earth and providing as little radar cueing data to a threat system as possible, isn’t immune.
However, let’s say that the radar cueing timeline is too involved for your taste. EO/IR is damn near instantaneous, and many systems incorporate dual capabilities for the operator to select.
If you want to defend something, the best radar-guided AAA in the world is garbage compared to a modern SAM system.
The only two advantages of a AAA system are:
1. Pricetag. Barrels and ammo are relatively cheap to slap onto an existing guidance vehicle, and cheap/simple to operate. Missiles are expensive.
2. Versatility. As Kim Jong Un has proudly demonstrated, AAA pieces (guided and unguided) are still just big guns and can be pointed horizontally at ground targets, even if the effect on armor or hardened targets is less than a dedicated artillery or anti-armor system.

America doesn’t have a gun problem, or we’d all be dead already. America has an emotional management problem – some people. (BTW, that’s why many stable people want to have guns themselves: to protect themselves from fists, knives, sticks, and even guns, when some unstable person goes off.)
The funny thing is, legal concealed carry people aren’t the ones who are flying-off and shooting places up…

The term SAM umbrella was created when Russian SA6 anti-aircraft missiles neutralized the Israeli Air Force in the 73 War. It would be several weeks before the Israelis were able to develop countermeasures to this outstanding aircraft killer.
During the Russian invasion of Afghanistan it was the American stinger missile that provided an SAM umbrella against the Russian Air Force.
Even a stinger missile can out range the heaviest anti-aircraft gun. And it’s faster to get into the fight.
Can civilians own a SAM??? Yes they can according to the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights.
No you can’t buy one in your corner gun store. But you can make your own missiles in your garage. And many Americans have done exactly that. Just check out the history of American rocketry, In your local library.
If you trust the government then I guess you don’t have to worry about the government bombing you like the coal miners were bombed in the twenties. Or the black portion in Tulsa Oklahoma was bombed from the air in the 1930s. Or when a House in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was bombed by the local government from the air. The city government started a fire that burned 60 innocent homes to the ground.
