How can something be “almost iconic”? Isn’t that like being “almost pregnant”? Regardless (ir redacted for pedant’s sanity), young master Weatherby’s not wrong about Dad’s Mark V Accumark rifle. And if he is—if the gun doesn’t shoot a 1.5 MOA or better 3-shot group at 100 yards from a cold barrel when used with premium (non-Weatherby calibers) or Weatherby factory ammunition—why you can send it back for a full refund. As for their Threat Response Rifle (a.k.a., Mark V TRR Custom Magnum or TRR), who cares about MOA? It’s a threat response rifle FFS. Although quite what “threat” you’d be responding to by shooting a .338 Lapua Magnum bullet is a question I’d like to put to the gun’s civilian owner. Via telephone. Anyway . . .

Weatherby, famous maker of big game guns, has got with the Lapua program. They’re chambering both the grand-in-the-hand Mark V and the $2700 TRR for the increasing popular cartridge. Oh, those were the prices for the non-Lapua guns. Now how much would you pay? Don’t answer! Because . . .

Our Mark V Accumark and TRR rifles are designed for situations that require pinpoint accuracy at extended ranges, so the .338 Lapua Magnum chambering is a natural.

Weatherby’s press release also reveals that the Lapua-shooting rifles feature a hand-laminated, raised-comb Monte Carlo composite stock with a matte gel coat finish and spiderweb accents.

Also working to enhance accuracy is a button-rifled, #3 contour (.705 muzzle diameter) free-floated stainless steel fluted barrel with target crown. The 28-inch overall barrel length includes an Accubrake™ to reduce felt recoil.

Caution! I Accubrake for elephants. But wait! There’s more!

Other features for precision shooting are a CNC-machined 6061 T-6 aluminum bedding plate and a factory-tuned, fully adjustable trigger. A Pachmayr Decelerator pad on the buttstock helps soften recoil.

Weatherby’s Mark V TRR rifle has a black composite stock with the CNC-machined 6061 T-6 aluminum bedding system. The three-position buttstock is adjustable for length of pull, drop at heel and cant of the pad, allowing a “custom-fit” to shooter size and shape for greater comfort, control and accuracy.

Also equipped with an Accubrake, the barrel measures 28 inches in overall length. Accuracy is further enhanced by the hand-tuned, fully adjustable trigger, which is factory set at three pounds with sear engagement factory set at .008 to .014.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices are $2,270 for the .338 Lapua Magnum Mark V Accumark and $2,879 for the .338 Lapua Magnum Mark V TRR. Right-hand models only.

So, something of a premium, then. Not to mention the cost of the ammo. Still, needs must.

  1. The TRR has a OA length of 48″ with a 26″ barrel… with that kind of length it is certainly useless at anything under 50yds. It’s capacity is listed as 2+1… It had better hit sub MOA at that price.
