thefirearmblog.com gives us the heads-up on an Elvis scepter-length flashlight gun. We’re not talking about some woosy .22 caliber derringer deal. This bad boy shoots a .410 shotshell. Yes. One. Maybe someone could shine a light on a simple question: under what circumstances would the CSG Maglite Flashlight Gun be a good idea? The caps lock product description [text and pic of the “trigger” after the jump] calls the $895 Flashlight Gun a “last chance” back-up defensive weapon. So you pull the grenade style safety pin, slide the button across, cock and release. Then the director calls “CUT!” and you move on to the next scene . . .

  1. Yes, because what I look for in a flashlight is having a live round of ammunition pointed at my person every time I shine a light on something.

  2. The manufacturer should bribe a congressman to threaten to ban them. They’ll fly off the shelves.

  3. So you cut some notches and a hole in a Maglite, making a .410 “zip gun” and want $895 for it? I smell a ripoff.

  4. yeah…you can keep this $895+transfer fee+tax+shipping….’self defense (not really)’ item. i’ll keep my back room full of assault weapons and my px4 storm subcompact 9mm.

  5. One thing I’m pretty sure one of the things this would be good for is going to jail… aren’t guns that don’t look like guns AOWs?

The other problem with this is that if you are using it as a flashlight you are pointing a gun at yourself, and if you are using it as a gun, you are pointing a flashlight away from the target.

Also, for $895 you can get a lot of conventional gun and flashlight.

  6. This isn’t just impractical, it’s bloody dangerous. It’s a bad idea to disguise guns and deadly weapons as common household objects, because they won’t be handled with the respect and caution that weapon-handling demands.

There’s an urban myth about a pawn shop customer accidentally killing himself with a .22 pen gun that the pawnshop owner didn’t even know was a gun. This story may be apocryphal, but it illustrates the dangers of disguised firearms: how the hell are you supposed to know it’s a gun, and avoid blowing your own head off with it?

  7. I think CSG got it backwards. They should have made a .410 that shoots unlimited rounds but only lights once.

  8. I would like to see this flashlight as a semi-auto with at least 5 shots and a better trigger system with a laser for more accurate aiming.

  9. I won’t be interested until it is available in .50 BMG. Why? Because that is the only way I can see to make this less safe.

  10. OH HEY…I got a great idea from this item…combination binoculars and double stiletto knife defense weapon…if you see someone coming through the binoculars you quickly pull them away from your eyes and slide the lever right next to the focus wheel and 2 6 inch blades deploy out of the eyepieces and VIOLA you’re ready to defend yourself…good idea?
