Last January, former U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz [R-FL-1] introduced H.R. 374. It was a short bill that became known as the “Abolish the ATF Act.” 

“The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is hereby abolished,” Gaetz’s bill said. 

It was simple, really. 

Unfortunately, it received the same response as other bills Gaetz had submitted, such as H.R. 9534, the National Constitutional Carry Act, or H.R.3142, the Stand Your Ground Act of 2023. The bills were introduced but never received any further attention. 

Gaetz didn’t seem to care about his lost legislation. He had bigger things on his mind. 

A Warrior

Gaetz will always be known best for leading the fight that dumped the former Republican Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, last year. But for those who really know the 42-year-old former congressman who lives in Fort Walton Beach, Florida with his wife Ginger, this too was just par for his course. 

Gaetz’s critics were never the silent type. Now, they’ve become slaphappy and completely unglued.  

Axios reported there were gasps in the room coming from Republican lawmakers when Gaetz name was first announced. 

“It must be the worst nomination for a cabinet position in American History,” John Bolton told NBC’s Meet the Press. Gaetz is “totally incompetent” for the AG position, Bolton said, adding, “This is a nomination the Republican Party would oppose.” 

“I don’t think it’s a serious nomination for the attorney general,” said Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska. “This one was not on my Bingo card.”

The BBC seemed to get Trump’s Gaetz decision better than the rest of the traditional media. They said Gaetz’s “bombastic approach” meant that he has no shortage of enemies, including some of his fellow Republicans.  

“And so, Trump’s choice of Gaetz for this crucial role is a signal to those Republicans, too – his second administration will be staffed by loyalists who he trusts to enact his agenda, conventional political opinion be damned,” the BBC wrote. 

Gaetz’s recent resignation from the House brought a quick halt to the internal investigations that had plagued him for the past few years, and House Speaker Mike Johnson referred to Gaetz as an “accomplished attorney.”

“He’s a reformer in his mind and heart, and I think that he’ll bring a lot to the table on that,” Johnson said.

To be clear, Gaetz has denied every allegation made against him, which are now all moot.  

Critics Be Damned 

Matt Gaetz was not available Thursday. Calls to his former congressional phone numbers went straight to voicemail. Additional phone numbers were not answered either. 

Gaetz is nothing new or divisive to longtime Floridians. In fact, he’s exactly what we want from our public servants. A longtime radio host told me Thursday morning that Gaetz’s now former constituents cared about two issues: “Guns and guns.” I would strongly agree. 

Gaetz cares more about the Second Amendment than anyone else in Congress – especially the Democrats. So, of course they are going to attack him personally. In fact, Gaetz is currently attracting as much if not more hate and discontent from the left than President-elect Donald J. Trump.

Unfortunately, much of the press Gaetz now faces is about what you’d expect, especially the stories from NBC.

A story published by NBC News Wednesday titled, “Justice Dept. employees stunned at Trump’s ‘insane,’ ‘unbelievable’ choice of Matt Gaetz for attorney general,” sums up most of the angst that characterizes the legacy media. 

“OMG,” a current senior Justice Department official said. A second department official called the selection “truly stunning,” and a third labeled it “insane,” the story claims. Of course, none of the alleged Republicans were named. 

I’m pretty confident that Gaetz isn’t bothered by NBC’s stories or those of other likeminded reporters. After all, he’s got as they say in his section of Florida’s panhandle, bigger fish to fry.

Matt Gaetz has strongly supported the Second Amendment since his first day in Congress, and he will get President-elect Trump’s backing for his new job regardless of what the Democrats (and it appears some Republicans) choose to do, even if it takes a recess appointment or some other type of maneuver.

Florida and now the entire country need Matt Gaetz.

      In the summer of 2020, Gaetz got into a fiery altercation with the former Rep. Cedric Richmond during a congressional hearing on police reform. During a heated back-and-forth, Gaetz exploded at Richmond for suggesting he didn’t know what it was like to fear for a Black son.

      Gaetz was unmarried and—as far as the public knew—childless at the time, so many were left scratching their heads after his exchange with Richmond. That same day, however, the Florida congressman took to Twitter to post a photo of someone he described as “my son Nestor,” a 19-year-old from Cuba who’d apparently lived with him for six years. “We share no blood but he is my life,” Gaetz said. He also emphasized in his post that Nestor came to Florida “legally.”

      Gaetz and Nestor’s relationship has since been scrutinized, however. Nestor is the son of Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend and spent time living with both Gaetz and his blood family in Florida. Gaetz was also discovered to have described Nestor in social media posts as a “local student” in 2016 and as “my helper” in 2017.“

      Perhaps his inability to acknowledge his interracial ‘son’ born out of wedlock is just more of the conservative Republican ‘family values’ bullshit.

        Nestor was born and raised in Cuba by his mother. She passed away from breast cancer when Nestor was 12. He moved to the United States to live with his older sister, who was dating and living with Gaetz at the time. This is where Gaetz formed his relationship with the kid.

    The thing about recess appointments though is they are temporary and expire at the end of the next senate session. But by that time Trump would have enough time to round up the votes needed for a senate vote. But in the interim under a recess appointment Gaetz could start to set things right and could also shut down any Biden DOJ ATF anti-2A legal actions.

The Senate determines when it is in session. Day1: Senate recesses for 60 days. Day 5: the Senate reconvenes, and sets the confirmation hearing to begin at 1800hrs same day. Day 6: Senate denies confirmation of the nominee. Day 7: Start the confirmation process for the next nominee for AG.

      Recess appmts are temporary. Given the overwhelming unhappiness with Trump’s nominees, the Senate can remain in session for four years, denying all of Trump’s nominees, leaving the AG/DOJ in the hands of some deputy (likely a career burrocrat).

      The Senate is not obligated to confirm any nominee, at all.

      The payment from Greenberg, an accused sex trafficker, to the 17-year-old took place in June 2017. It was for $300 and, according to the memo field, was for “Food.”

      Nearly a year after Greenberg’s June 2017 payment, Gaetz Venmo’d Greenberg to “Hit up ___,” using a nickname for the teen. She was 18 years old by then, and as The Daily Beast reported, Greenberg described the payment as being for “School.”

      It was one of at least 16 Venmo payments to 12 different women listed as being for “School.” Typically, the payments were for around $500, but also went higher than $1,000 in the transactions obtained by The Daily Beast.

      Gaetz made only one previously unreported transaction in the newly obtained documents: a payment from the Florida congressman to the former Seminole County tax commissioner for $300 on November 1, 2018, with the love hotel emoji (“🏩”) in the memo field. The Daily Beast was unable to tie that transaction directly to any woman, but confirmed that Greenberg booked one night for that date at The Alfond Inn, a luxury hotel in Winter Park, Florida.

      In the Venmo transactions reviewed by The Daily Beast, however, there are at least 16 payments in 2017 totaling nearly $5,000 to a woman who would later go on to date Matt Gaetz. Additionally, Greenberg paid her $1,500 over the course of two days in April 2017 using Cash App. That woman—who came to Washington, D.C. as an intern in January 2018—has said she dated Gaetz during and after her senior year in college.“

  18. Gaetz was a fairly ineffective Congressman. They are graded not for twitter posts or laws they introduced, but by laws they actually got passed. He didn’t get much accomplished for any cause.

    We should always be a little suspicious of Congressman who loudly say they are in favor of something they know will never get passed and that they are not really working to get passed. Think Bernie Sanders saying he wants everyone to have free medical care. Or AOC saying everyone should have a free college education. Or Gaetz saying he wanted to abolish ATF. (The word for this sort of behavior is pandering).

    I’ll jump out on a limb and say there are some things we need done by something like an ATF. For example, checking gun dealers to make sure they don’t sell guns to criminal gangs of felons. There are also a lot of things that ATF does that they do poorly or even with malice, and those are the things that need to be reformed. Perhaps Gaetz would be a better hero for those of us who support the 2A if he had worked to exercise oversight of ATF and reform it.

    • Except Gaetz introduced a bill to abolish BATFE. Bernie and Cortez did nothing but grift money from the donors and vote for things they claimed to disagree with like renewing the PATRIOT act and it’s successors.

          I avoided bringing that up, it would have been too confusing a concept for him so I went with the same thing but with a more simple wording of ‘politically leaning’. I try to reply to him on his ‘simple’ level and its difficult to come down that far, but I try to use a simple ‘A then B then C…, type ‘guided approach’ progression and use different wording for concepts he is less likely to understand or has already indicated he does not understand most times, but mostly he even has a difficult time with that progression. I’d estimate his reading and comprehension level at about average 3rd grade.
