Let’s skip to the middle of the abc11.com post to get straight to the Defensive Gun Use (DGU) part of the story. “[Sheldon] Dix savagely attacked a mother who was waiting in her car at a nearby church parking lot. When another man saw the attack and tried to intervene, Dix starting beating on the man. The woman in the car then pulled out a handgun and shot at the attacker. ‘The victim in the car happened to be a concealed-permit holder. She had a legal right. She retrieved her firearm and fired off two rounds,’ said Fayetteville Police Lt. Tim Tew.” It’s a damn shame she missed. But someone else did not, only minutes later . . .

Thursday, just before midnight, [Glenn] Tew went to check on a noise in his den, and confronted 21 year old Sheldon Dix as Dix broke through a glass door.

“And I hollered at him, and he proceeded to come charging at me trying to knock me out, we kind of locked horns and fought on the floor.” Tew said.

Tew’s wife heard the commotion and ran to help her husband. She tossed the frying pan to her husband.

“I think my wife hit him in with a metal trash can a couple of times” Tew said. “And once I got the frying pan, I proceeded to give him a good dose of that.” .  . .

Glenn Tew hopes he can salvage his favorite frying pan.

“The bottom is a little messed up, but I expect I can hammer it back down,” he said.

It stops being funny when it starts being you. Home carry people, home carry. [h/t J&TT]

    • So, when someone uses a cast iron skillet improperly and hurts someone, now we have to sue Bass Pro Shop since they sold it. Oh boy, this is a slippery slope.

    • Lodge cast iron is the way to go, here. Don’t rely on one of those plastic-coated Glock non-stick pans…

      • I prefer a stainless steel 2 quart sauce pan. Mine has a 1/2″ thick bottom for one shot stops. The grip is ergonomic unlike cast iron models. The weight is centrally located in a sauce pan rather than frying pans of the same weight so with off center hits, the recoil is easy to manage without the wrist twisting. This helps if follow up shots are needed.

    • What I noticed is that the first confrontation that he had with an armed woman barely got a mention but the close encounter with a frying pan gets all the press, and a live interview..

Now we know why the perception by the general public that a successful use of a firearm for self-defense by a citizen is only a “myth”.

The liberal/progressive controlled press likes it that way. Can’t have the “useless eaters and breeders” get the idea that they can actually be effective in their own self-defense with those “evil” weapons of mass destruction.

      • Someone with a CCW scaring off an attacker isn’t anywhere near as good a story. It’s a bit of the old “Dog bites Mailman”. Ho hum, yawn.

But a guy beating seven bells out of someone with a frying pan? THAT is a catchy story. “Mailman bites Dog”.

The fact that the guy was genuinely pretty funny (even without meaning to be) with his comments – “gave him a good dose of that” and the bit about hammering the pan back into shape – made it perfect for media attention.

    • You want the nuclear option? My wife has a cast iron tea kettle with a bail handle. And a marble rolling pin.

That kitchen is a scary place.

    • Cast Iron is too brittle. My sister hit me with one with she was 16. The handle broke and the bottom cracked. I got a concussion, but our mother still put the blame on me. I was responsible for getting the frying pan repaired. Not a new one. I had to fix that one. Mom gave my wife the frying pan as s wedding gift. She cooked breakfast with it this morning.

My life is like a sitcom.

      No, I’m not from Florida.

  1. So, Dix attacked a woman in a car, beat a man attempting to help her, then at some point went to another location and violently attacked the people there?

Let me guess. With these attacks, Dix was just trying to turn his life around…after multiple past felony convictions.

    FTFA:

“Investigators say Dix is in custody undergoing a mental evaluation. Police say he faces several charges.”

I’m interested to know what past charges this 21 year old has faced as well.

    • No, progressive DA will charge victims for “utilizing a kitchen implement as a weapon “. “Mr. Dix crashed through their door while evading being assaulted by a person with a firearm, whereupon the residents assaulted him with a blunt object causing massive cranial injuries.” As we should ALL know, one must not interfere when people are just attempting to turn their wayward lives around.

  2. Maybe add a Ruger LCR to the Kitchen Arsenal? It’s what I have in 9mm, 38 special, 22lr flavors for home carry & CC

  3. So, both the Police Lt. and the frying pan defender have last name Tew?

That threw me off for a bit. For a few seconds, I thought Dix had gone to the cop’s house or something.

That kind of things does not happen often (cop and victim share a last name) in a town the size of Fayetteville.

  4. I don’t home carry but if I’m investigating a noise at night downstairs, yep, different story.

    • I don’t home carry for the sake of home carry, it’s really that I was carrying and was at home at time.

My home isn’t huge; I’m usually not more than 10-12 feet from a gun at any given time.

But then again, I’m also one of those crazies who have CC’ed revolvers and .380s, and who think off body carry is fine – I like to live dangerously.

      • I had trouble sleeping a few nights ago, found myself downstairs at 4:30 am, after a cup of coffee discovered that there I sat, with my loaded 9mm on my hip, it is just automatic. Actually semiautomatic, but you know what I mean.

  5. boooo,

we can’t have people taking the law into their own hands. the homeowner should have called 911, then run away. physically harming another with a heavy household item is just not good common sense. police should have confiscated all the pans.

  6. Cast iron pans are great, for cooking. It would take me a few minutes to get hold of any of mine, but only a few seconds to draw my gun. And anyone breaking into my home would make so much noise (along with the dog) that I’d have plenty of time to access any of the guns around my place even if I wasn’t carrying at the time. Bedtime and showers are two pretty tough carry situations. But guns are always close at hand even then. I have a holster for the 9mm bolted to the bed frame. 🙂

    I’ll save the pans for cooking… 🙂

  7. Mr. Dix is going to catch hell in the Cumberland County Correctional Center for getting beat up with a frying pan.

  8. Shot at and hit with a frying pan, so for Sheldon he’s 0-2 scratch that, 0-4 going to the hospital and jail.

  9. If you are not going to carry a pistol strapped to your hip in your home, at least consider this alternative:
    (a) Lock your ALL METAL and GLASS storm door AND your entry door.
    (b) Have a firearm readily available that you can access in the amount of time it takes an intruder to break through your storm door AND your entry door.

    Important notes:
    (1) Anyone who attempts to get through a metal and glass storm door is going to make a LOT of noise. This noise is your alarm. It should give you enough to time to promptly access your home defense firearm, because the intruder is going to have to break through two doors and that first (storm) door is going to be messy with lots of sharp metal and glass.
    (2) If you do not already have a storm door that is all metal and glass, install one.
    (3) If an intruder has a flat pry-bar, they may be able to open your locked storm door without much noise at all. They may also be able to gain entry through an open window or screen door. Therefore, a “readily available firearm” may not be readily available enough in those situations.

  10. Are nonstick pans, especially the new ceramic coated ones, the same as the old copkiller Talon bullets?

If you’re passing your kitchen, remember the Santoku is for slicing and dicing, the Chef’s is better at stabbing. But when in doubt, just grab the cleaver.

  11. I’m thinking homie was just looking to get fried…a pan is a terrible thing to waste>use a bullet. Yeah-home carry or at least have multiple weapons handy(I have knives, axes(plural),a machete, baseball bats, pepper balsters(plural) as well as something more powerful…

  12. The thermal conductivity of stainless steel is approximately 1/10 that of aluminum. Makes lousy cookware.

  13. This has been the most traumatic thing we’ve ever been thru. It is very hard to lay down at night and go to sleep. We live in a very respectable neighborhood. We have never owned a gun but will get one now. The frying pan was not cast iron. It was a heavy duty metal pan about 8″. Our house is kind of stretched out and for that reason we could not hear him breaking the glass door. We had just laid down when our dog started barking and jumped off the bed, it was then that I heard a thumping sound. When I opened the bedroom door my small dog ran down the hall barking. I then was close enough that I then heard the glass shatter in a million pieces. I yelled and when he saw me he charged at me like a knew we had and an intruder entering our house. By the time I turned the corner to go into the den I then heard the door shatter. He was entering the house and I yelled and he began to charge me to knock me out. Things so fast the door shatter and he was entering He finally finished breaking it just as I was coming around the corner into the room. I yelled at him and he began to charge me immediately trying to knock me out. We were only 10 feet apart. You are so terrified that you do not know what you will do until it happens to you. We are senior citizens who grew up working hard for what we got
and didn’t expect to be given anything. If our young people of today would be made to have responsibility then they would know that what ever they needed or wanted they could work hard and earn it. There are plenty of people became very successful without having to steel from other. We should all use the golden rule and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. My God Bless America and help and protect us all from all the evil in the world.

  14. Any attacker breaks into our kitchen is in for a world of hurt. The easiest thing to grab for a weapon is a self-heating tea pot, which happens to be kept full of water at two degrees under boiling. How about a dose of that?
